A morning run; suprises from my wife: a homemade birthday card, coffee and pastries from my favorite bakery; taking the day off; playing frisbee with tonka in the park; calls from mom and dad; emails from KT; birthday wishes from catalyst; a cake from catalyst (and some conference call trickery); going out to lunch with charlie, casy and gabe; riding my bike and taking pictures; murderball and beers @ san marco theater; dinner at the chart house.

Yesterday Catalyst employees were trying to gather money together for donations to the Red Cross. Everyone was very happy to give so I suggested that the company match the employee contributions. Jason, my boss, said he would be happy to match whatever we contributed. I posted this to inspire others to ask their employers to match any contributions made to the relief effort.

On another note yesterday about 5:00pm was a dark day for the American people. While watching the network news I felt absolutely disgusted and sick to my stomach about our government leaders and how they just left the people of New Orleans, mostly poor and black, to fend for themselves. I just kept saying over and over "how can something like this happen?" "why aren't we doing anything?" "wtf is going on?!"

As this week fades into next it will be interesting to see how the governments spins their response to this crisis.

Damn, don't let the bling blind ya, my new bike is so icey! Early birthday present are the junk. Happy Birthday to Amanda too! Wow, what a good week for birthdays.

I took her out for a test run today and I am so in love. Since this is a fixed-gear bike there is no way to stop pedaling and it is quite a new experience. Once I got the hang of it, I felt like the bike and I were one machine. Rolling toward our destination in unmatched synchronicity.

There is a new, highly addictive, TV network called current_ The network is the brainchild of Al Gore and features viewer produced content, most of it it documentary film style. They also have features like "current_ flashback", "google current_" and movie reviews.

As you can expect there are lots of stories about the Israeli withdraw from Gaza, but there are also stories on tattoo removal, medicinal marijuana, Tokyo street art and the resurgence of band posters. Most of the shows are anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes and then it is on to the next show. You can check out the homepage of the website for the next hour or so worth of programming.

As a new network the content is kinda of slim now so there are lots of current_ vj's talking blah blah blah, but I can see this evolving into something great. Check their website to see if you get it in your area.

Pre-Birthday

I went out with my dad tonight for my pre-birthday celebration. With these modern families today it is too hard to see everyone on your birthday so you have to make compromises. We had a sweet time starting with dinner @ Longhorn. After ribs and salmon we went to Barnes and Noble. Barnes and Noble was the best, dad and I looked for baby names and researched cribs and changing tables. We have done the most extensive research to date on the crib/changing table duo. For my birthday my dad got me the perfect gift: a bike rack for my car (pictured above). It's great b/c it will hold my main present which will arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Tonka is slurping on his kong and I am sitting on the floor blogging and watching the VMAs. I am dead tired from running and riding my bike around today. I must have burned 1000 calories. I rode around the city taking pictures for my Jacksonville Street Art series that will be featured on UrbanJacksonville in two weeks.

Cribs, Names & Nursery's

This morning we started the day with some Cracker Barrel. Mmmm. You know how some mornings you wake up and think "Yeah! It would be fun to go out to breakfast" Then after breakfast you feel all full and wish you had just had a bowl of cereal at home. Today was one of those mornings.

After Cracker Barrel we went to Babies R Us and checked out cribs and all other types of baby related items. It was fun to think we will be using all of that stuff in just a few months. It is my job to research cribs and changing tables while Mackenzie is gone so I am looking forward to diving in to that. Oh yeah, Mackenzie is going to Dallas Sunday morning and not coming home until Thursday. A long ass time.

Now that we know its a boy we have started to pick out names. We actually have a few we like, which I never thought would happen.

Updating, writing, researching etc. On Wednesaday we went out with our friends Charlie and Casy and I was inspired, by Casy, to start posting to Team Silver Street again. So here is the first post. Mackenzie is in Tampa today so I took the day to do battle with the yard. I did lots of landscaping and other work in the front yard. Landscaping consists of getting real dirty and sweating about a gallon of sweat. It was hard hot work but rewarding in the end. I just finished eating enchiladas rancheros from Ole! I am watching a movie and tonka is sitting on the floor slurping his kong. Tonight I plan to pass out around 10 or 11 as I am pretty tired. I also plan to do some blogging on UrbanJacksonville.

Ta-Da! The fence is complete, almost. We still need to install the gate, my new gate hardware iz da bomb! I also have to finish painting a section. I ran out of paint with one panel left, what an amateur!!

I have been devoting a lot of time lately to the UrbanJacksonville blog. I knew my posting activity here would dwindle, but its worth it. I have been racking up lots of page views and I get emails daily from interested folks. I set up a counter on the page (way, way down at the bottom.) Right now I have 657 hits since Friday, which is dope. I hope one day to live off advertising revenue and be an independent reporter.

Mackenzie is definitely showing! Her friend advised her to tell someone before people start gossiping. I noticed she was showing the same day her friend mentioned it. Its great, she is so cute! We heard the baby's heartbeat on Monday and that was very exciting. Things are changing.

I just finished watching a really good documentary called Street Fight. Street Fight was about the 200 Newark, NJ mayoral race between the incumbent mayor and a newcomer named Corey Booker. It was an excellent documentary that really exposed the shady sides of local politics. If your PBS station broadcasts P.O.V. (Point Of View) you should really get into the habit of watching. You might even be able to catch a rebroadcast of Street Fight.

Mackenzie, the Hurricane Hunter, is out of town for the next few days. She flew to Dallas this morning, right over hurricane Dennis! She is dope for doing that, I think I probably would have been too scared and just cancelled my trip. I miss her already, I hope she comes home soon!

Of A Wednesday

I spent some more time painting today and damn I have mad respect for all the fence painters out there. Its some difficult work, not to mention messy, not to mention if you are painting fences you are probably doing it outside which means misquitos, ants and spiders. Our new fence is going to be so tight though so all the work is worth it. Here is the status: 9 panels fully primed, 3 panels to prime, then comes the real paint. We are going with brown, it will be tre shiek. Hopefully the fence will be fully operational by next week.

Here is some Silver Street news. I am having a good time doing the UrbanJacksonville thing, I am digging for stories and getting scoops, I hope I keep it up.

Kenz update: we were supposed to take pictures of her belly but we forgot, again. She is doing really good. Not too sick anymore, but still tired. We are really looking forward to being parents.

It's that time of year again. I don't think it has stopped raining for more than 4 hours in the last week. Big changes are coming to Silver Street. Kenz and I are working hard to get a fence up in the front yard, but with all this damn rain it make take a few weeks. See the big palm tree in the picture? The City is removing it so that should definately change the landscape a bit. The final big news is Craig Van Horn from Symbiosis bought the apartment building behind our house. Read more here.

The Set-up
I am riding my bike downtown on an errand for Mackenzie. We all know Jacksonville is not a very bike friendly city. People here do not understand the concept of yeilding to bike, much less pedestrians. I have just come off the line side-by-side with this seafoam Honda Civic. We are still side-by-side when we come to a narrow place in the road and the car starts steering into me! I am like WTF!?! Just then a woman leans her head out the window and yell "Hey Asshole, ride on the sidewalk and this won't happen!"

Music always suprises me and this time it's hip-hop that punches me in the gut letting me know its not going away. I always think "how can people possibly innovate or come up with something new that I like?" It always happens, they always do and thats why I love music so much! Synchopated flows that still reside in the UK, not to be heard by the mainstream population for years to come. All City Part IV

This is the last installment of my All City Tour. Brooklyn was my last stop and I went graffiti crazy. There is so much art on the walls over there it is ridiculous. I was running through Brooklyn yesterday and I saw my favorite building (picture two in the series) being demolished. It was a two story brick building in the middle of a grassy field. The reason I liked it so much is it reminded me of all the old warehouses in Downtown Minneapolis. I'm sure it was probably a structural hazard and had to go, but I was sad to see it gone.

The third stop of my All City Tour was La Villa, a small out of the way section of Downtown Jacksonville. It is extends West of the city and ends and I-95. Book-ended by Springfield in the North and Brooklyn in the South, La Villa is an exiting part of Urban Jacksonville not many people know about.

I started and ended in Springfield. In my attempt to save film I did not start out taking too many pictures. Once I started taking pictures I couldn't stop, so by the time I got back home I was out of film. Basically what I am getting to is the Springfield selection is pretty slim.

I spent about 2 hours riding my bike around four of the neighborhoods circling downtown. I hit Springfield, Downtown, Brooklyn and Riverside. I was beat and out of film by the time I started trucking home. This is the last picture of the day. They have been working day and night renovating the old TSI building. Check out those detail on those doors!

I think I need to stop being so cynical. I think look at everything from that angle, and it is probably annoying to most people. And by that angle I mean, Michael Moore-ish, media/goverment consipracy type ish. I will start keeping that stuff to myself. Well at least 50% of it.

So I am thinking of starting two new blogs. But then again I know how I neglect team silver street and I think better of it. However if I ever get around to it, my two new blogs will be (1) all about springfield and dtown and (2) all about street art in jacksonville. I will have to give them both some more consideration.

Most of the past two days has been all about our neighbor reggie buggin mackenzie and I for $$$. I have counted 4 times he has been over to our house in the past two days asking for a handout in one form or another. So I told him to stop buggin us for money before he makes me angry. Then I offered him our lawn mower and suggested he go earn some money. It worked and he mowed my grass for free.

We are getting drenched by tropical storm arlene today. We planned on walking to the new weekend farmers market on the riverwalk between hogan and laura streets. That's not heppening today, maybe tomorrow. I was also going to get started building a fence for the front yard, and thats not happening either.

Last night Kenz and I went to World Market and bought a new rug for the living room. We reorganized the house a bit. Pictures below:

Protect Springfield

I have a better understanding of what is going on now. Basically last night was a Q&A with a representitive from GSA. GSA is a goverment agency that buys and sells property. They will sell the property to anyone who meets thier requirements and can afford it. Well a company names River Region Rehabilitation (RRR) want to buy the Old Job corp building on the corner of Silver and 3rd street, right across from Klutho Park to house the Homeless, Drug Users, HIV/AIDS patients, the mentally ill and petty criminals. The Springfield residents caught wind of this and called for the meeting we had last night.

The basic argument against the purchase is the property is not zoned for this type of business. I got kind of lost in the all of the technical talk, but it seems pretty cut and dry to me. Inconsistencies in RRRs application and City Ordinances should be enough to keep this from happening, but who knows. Most of the residents wanted to know how this got so far before anyone found out about it and why do they want to place another facility like this in a residential neighborhood already saturated with similar facilites. In a 1 square mile radius there are at least 6 homeless/rehabilitation centers.

Residents are organizing letter campaigns and I will be doing my part by writing a letter and mailing to as many people as I can. I am also attending a town hall meeting on the 20th with Mayor Peyton and half of Springfield. If you want to help us figh this you can write a letter too.

GSA - Disposes of federal property. The woman from GSA is not very popular and she seems kind of nervous. Blah blah blah. Basically all the goverment crap you always hear politicians spewing. She is impressed by the number of people that are here. The company, River Region, who applied for this property to become a homeless shelter, did not even dens a representitive tonight.

Zoning Issues
The way they want to use the building does not comply with the zoning requirements. Now everyone is breaking out the rules. I have no idea what they are talking about but it seems like there is something fishy about this whole deal.

Alright they are getting ready to start talking. My hands smell like fish from dinner tonight. Everyone is quieting down now and I can't see with all the people standing in front of me.

Main objection: Such a large concentration of homeless shelters and halfway houses already why do we need another one. Plus the building is not zoned for this type of thing.

Henrietta's continues to fill with more and more people. I am very impressed with the turnout. I am sitting next to an architect named Jason that just moved here from Gainsvill. He was filling me in on some of the details. Apparently a federal agency wants to move a homeless shelter into the old job corps building, DUH. Well the type of people who will be moving in are drug users and criminals. Great! People have now taken the podium and everyone is gathering around. Its getting kind of hot in here now. Im glad Kenz is back at home, she probably wouldn't have liked all this heat.

It is going down tonight at Henrietta's! Gloves come off as residents battle the city in a fight for the park. Here are the details: this city wants to install a homeless shelter on the corner of Silver and 3rd in the old Job Corps building. I agree, the homeless need a place to go at night and when it gets cold, but this is right smack, dab in a residential area. The old Job Corp is a beautiful historic structure right across from the biggest park in Springfield. Perhaps the only park in Springfield not already bustling with the homeless. If the shelter goes in this will surely change.

The backbone of the residents' argument is the Job Corp building is a historic structure and thus not zoned for a homelesss shelter. We are going over to Henrietta's for a public forum around 7:30. I will live blog the meeting if I can get my laptop to work.

1. Corbett vs. Dempsey.
This is pretty close to you guys: This exhibition at Corbett vs. Dempsey will bring together Walter Hahn’s Chicago-era paintings and drawings for the first time since the 1950s. Among the works exhibited will be sketches of H. C. Don't ask. We arrived in Chicago about 20 minutes late but after a short train ride we met Timmy and Amanda in the city. We took the Orange line from Midway Airport to the Clark/Lake stop on the Loop. Down the stairs of the well kept train stop and and out to the street. We turned right and spyed Timmy and Amanda across the street. Sweet, we;re finally here!

Timmy hailed a taxi and within minutes we were on our way to the West Village. Our cab ride was short and chaotic, why do all cab drivers drive like wild banshees?? Timmy and Amanda live in a densly packed neighborhood of skinny, two to three story apartments/condos. They say new apartments spring up overnight around here an I believe it. The real estate market over here is surely booming. After a short tour of the office we were ready to chow! We began our journey North on foot through the neighborhood in search of something to eat. We walked the same route Amanda takes home from work. It's an interesting stroll past store fronts and more apartments. I can't really say Chicago reminds me of somewhere I've been because it's so unique. I would have to say a cross between New York and Minneapolis. I can't help but want to live here too. We found a place to eat, the name escapes me now, but here are some pictures.

It was pretty smokey in there so we had to dip out, we caught a cab home and hit the sack for sleep. Big day tomorrow.

We are sitting in the Tampa airport, whoa it is sooo nice. Free wireless to, cmon jacksonville get on it! Anyway the flight from JAX was good. There were crazy amounts of screaming kids. THis was my first experience on a Southwest flight and it was pretty crazy, they do lots of innovative things and their flight attendants are too funny.

Kenz is doing good. She did not feel sick on the plane or anything, we thought she might. Well towards the end she did. In Chicago soon!

LONDON, England -- British authorities trying to identify a mute pianist found wandering on a beach have been given more than 300 possible names, but have yet to establish his identity.

Health officials, who have joined forces with police to solve a mystery which has attracted global attention, said they had received more than 600 calls about the possible identity of the man.

A spokesman for health authorities in Kent, southern England, where the man was found on April 7 clad in a dripping-wet suit, from which all the labels had been cut, said reports he could be French were only "speculation."

Police in Rome said a Polish mime artist had identified the pianist found as a French musician from Nice named Steve Massone, although Massone's family has denied this.

An Italian Web site on Wednesday said the man could be Martin Sturefalt, a touring classical pianist from Sweden who had previously studied in London.

All efforts to communicate with the shy and agitated man, who is in his 20s or early 30s, have failed, leaving experts baffled over his identity.

Staff at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham gave the tall, blonde man a pen and paper in the hope he would write his name or draw his country's flag.

Instead, he drew highly detailed pictures of a grand piano, showing not only the keys, but also the intricate inner workings of the instrument.

When shown a piano in the hospital chapel, he played classical music "beautifully." Since then, he has written music, but remains mute.

Social worker Michael Camp said: "I cannot get within a yard of him without him becoming very anxious. Yet at the piano he comes alive. I can stand close to him and he is oblivious. It is extraordinary."

It was initially thought the man, who has been described as "very vulnerable," may have attended a local funeral, but inquiries proved he had not been to any services nearby.

I am here to report to you my happenings.

NYC was very NYC. My brief summary: The subway smelled of urine, Brooklyn was cold and displayed its brick-like toughness, the shows were second-class, and the van rides were surprisingly fun. More detail? Read on. Rick broke a string on the first song, so that pretty much set the tone for the first show. I think it stemmed from the arrogant irish sound guy and the weeks of preparing for this one important show. A show is a show.

We had very little time in the actual city. I did however get to go to the MET and Apple Store SOHO. The MET was amazing. I plan on going when I have more then 45 minutes to hang out and look around. I saw what I wanted, three Rothkos, two Klines, the most amazing Pollock ever, Caravaggio's, David's, Newmanns, and a whole mess of others. The MET left me thinking, Abstract Art is a soundtrack, and Rothko has the finest french horn section.

I took pictures and I will upload them soon.

Now to what I really wanted to talk about. The Headphones released their new and amazing CD today. Imagine this, Pedro the Lion, vintage keyboards, and good drumming (Mata Hari done right, if I may say so myself). Give her a listen, would ya?!

Elections in Britain

The elections in the UK are going on right now. The Labour party (Tony Blair's party) will most likely get the majority of the seats, but the exit polls show much less a gain than was expected. It is interesting to watch though, the Liberal Dems are gaining more seats than expected, and mostly due to the Iraq war. Anyway, I find it interesting because they hold their leaders accountable, where as we give our leaders increased power in the Government. Wow, what a last couple of weeks. I have been in drive mode, literally. In the last two weeks I have worked sixty hours, studied for three tests, and completed three highly involved projects. Not to mention since the day I was done with school (last Wednesday) I have worked till 2AM hanging new store displays and 12AM launching new products at the store, played two out of town shows, and went to Mall of Millenia AND Islands of Adventure, plus all the driving in between. So, now that that is over what I am going to do? Well, work tomorrow and head out to NYC at 5AM on Wednesday, only to arrive back home early Sunday morning (I'll probably work) and then start school on Tuesday. Yes!

Who wants something from NYC?

P.S - On the way I am reading the new Star Wars book and playing video games on my laptop. Who wants to comment on what a dork I am? Thanks in advance.

This weekend should be super-eventful. We are going to try to pick some exterior colors for the perry street house. It looks sooo different! It looks like some jihadists exploded a car bomb on the front porch. I will get over there and grab a picture. I know you guys are curious. Well I finished "The Catcher in the Rye" and I don't see what all the hoopla is. I mean I know it is on banned book lists, maybe becuase the the language. Holden Caufield sure does GD-this and GD-that alot. What a dissaffected youth.

Timmy, since you are going to be without your lover this weekend may I suggest you head over to the libary and pick up a book entitled "Blink" by Malcom Gladwell. It is a very interesting discussion of the human minds ability to evaluate people and situations in the blink of an eye. It is pretty short, it took be about 5 hours or so to read it and the last chapter you can skip around. I found it pretty fascinating. Some people on Amazon think the book is a load of horse-shit, but whatever.

Happy Earth Day to everyone!

There are many important environmental issues surrounding us these days that aren't really being addressed. It is the 35th Anniversary of Earth Day, so what better time than now to take up a project! We should all go to Starbucks today and get a coffee. On the cup will be some type of project, like making an organic garden or using less gasoline.

Also, my little lady Amanda should be in Jacksonville soon. While I will miss her immensely, I know I must give her up every once in a while so that she may share her love with friends and family. Have a great weekend everyone!
